Proton Pass launched in 2023, the newest product here, from Proton, the Swiss company that built Proton Mail and Proton VPN. Proton's entire identity is privacy, and Proton Pass is that philosophy applied to password management.

What Makes Proton Pass Special

Email aliases are the killer feature. Proton Pass includes hide-my-email aliases, randomly generated email addresses that forward to your real inbox. Unlimited aliases come with paid plans. Instead of handing every website your real email, you give each one a unique alias. If a site gets breached or sells your data, you know exactly who leaked it, and you can kill that alias instantly. No other manager on this list does this as cleanly.

Proton Pass is open source across all its apps, and it's built on Proton's Swiss infrastructure, which falls under strong Swiss privacy law outside US and EU jurisdiction. It uses end-to-end encryption that covers not just passwords but also the URLs and other fields, something not every competitor encrypts fully.

It also bundles. If you already pay for Proton Unlimited, Proton Pass is included alongside Proton Mail, Calendar, Drive, and VPN. For privacy-focused users consolidating onto one provider, that's compelling.

Day-to-Day Experience

Proton Pass works on web, browsers, Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, and Android. Autofill is reliable, the interface is clean and modern, and there's a built-in two-factor authenticator on paid plans. Passkey support is included. Importing from other managers is straightforward.

The Honest Trade-offs

It's young. Launched in 2023, Proton Pass doesn't have the years of refinement that 1Password or Bitwarden do, and occasionally a feature feels a step behind. The free plan is decent but caps aliases at 10 and limits some features. Proton's ecosystem lock-in cuts both ways: great if you want the bundle, less so if you only want a password manager. Business and admin features, while growing, are less mature than the established enterprise players.

Who Should Choose Proton Pass

Proton Pass is the clear pick for privacy-focused users, especially anyone already in the Proton ecosystem or wanting unlimited email aliases. It's also a strong free option. If you need the deepest enterprise admin controls or the longest track record, established players still lead, but for privacy as a first principle, Proton Pass is excellent.
