From IQMS to DELMIAworks: A Manufacturing ERP in Transition

IQMS built a loyal following among plastics, rubber, and repetitive manufacturers over three decades. Then Dassault Systemes acquired it in 2019 for $425 million and rebranded it as DELMIAworks. The product gained access to Dassault's massive R&D budget and 3DEXPERIENCE platform. It also gained some corporate bureaucracy.

The core manufacturing capabilities remain strong. This is an ERP built by people who understand injection molding, extrusion, and assembly line scheduling. If that sounds niche, it is — and that's exactly why shops in these verticals choose it.

Where DELMIAworks Shines

Real-time production monitoring is the standout feature. The system connects directly to machines via OPC and other protocols, capturing cycle times, reject rates, and OEE metrics automatically. No manual data entry. No shift-end batch uploads. A plastics manufacturer running 50 machines can see exactly what every press is doing at any moment.

The built-in MES (Manufacturing Execution System) is genuinely differentiated. Most ERPs require a separate MES product bolted on through integration. DELMIAworks includes it natively, tracking work-in-process, quality inspections, and machine performance in the same database as your financials and inventory.

EDI integration handles automotive-grade communication requirements — ASN generation, AIAG labeling, and customer-specific packing slip formats. For manufacturers serving automotive OEMs, this saves weeks of custom development.

The Post-Acquisition Reality

Has the Dassault acquisition helped? Mixed results. R&D investment has increased, and integration with SOLIDWORKS and CATIA opens interesting design-to-manufacture workflows. But the rebranding confused existing customers, some longtime support staff departed, and the product roadmap now competes for attention with Dassault's broader portfolio.

Pricing has shifted upward since the acquisition. Where IQMS was known as a value option for mid-market manufacturers, DELMIAworks now positions as a premium solution. Expect $150-250 per user monthly for cloud, or six-figure perpetual licenses for on-premise. Implementation runs 4-9 months typically.

The on-premise version remains more mature than the cloud offering. Manufacturers with strict data sovereignty requirements or unreliable internet connections still benefit from local deployment. But cloud is clearly where Dassault is directing future development.
