What is Gusto?

Gusto started as ZenPayroll in 2011 and has become the default payroll solution for small businesses and startups. The company processes payroll for over 300,000 businesses, primarily in the 1-100 employee range.

Payroll is the core strength. Gusto handles all 50 US states, automatic tax calculations and filings, direct deposits, and contractor payments. The system calculates withholdings, files quarterly and annual taxes, and even handles new hire reporting. You run payroll in minutes rather than hours.

Benefits administration is surprisingly comprehensive for an SMB platform. Gusto brokers health insurance, dental, vision, 401(k), HSA, FSA, and commuter benefits. Their 401(k) integration partners offer low-cost plans that are typically only available to larger companies. Life and disability insurance are also available.

The hiring and onboarding features include offer letters, new hire checklists, document management, and electronic signatures. Employees can complete their I-9 and W-4 before their first day. Time tracking is built in, and PTO management handles accrual policies automatically.

Pricing is straightforward. Simple tier is $40/month plus $6/person for basic payroll. Plus tier at $80/month plus $12/person adds benefits, time tracking, and PTO. Premium tier (custom pricing) includes dedicated support, compliance services, and R&D tax credits.

The limitation is scale. Gusto is fantastic for small businesses but lacks the depth larger companies need. Once you hit 100-150 employees, you'll likely outgrow it. HR features are more basic than dedicated HRIS platforms.
