Mattermost

Mattermost launched in 2016 as an open-source answer to Slack, aimed squarely at organizations that need their messaging data to stay on infrastructure they control. It's written in Go and React, it's self-hostable, and it's become a standard in defense, government, and heavily regulated sectors.

What Makes Mattermost Special

Data sovereignty is the entire pitch. You install Mattermost on your own servers — on-premise, your private cloud, even air-gapped networks with no internet at all. Your messages, files, and metadata never touch a vendor's cloud. For organizations under ITAR, FedRAMP, or strict national data residency rules, that's not a nice-to-have, it's the only option.

Because it's open-source (the core is MIT-licensed), you can read the code, audit it, fork it, and extend it. The plugin framework and full REST API let teams build deep custom integrations. Mattermost also leans into developer and operations workflows — incident collaboration ("playbooks"), CI/CD notifications, and ChatOps are first-class.

Day-to-Day Experience

If you've used Slack, Mattermost feels familiar — channels, threads, direct messages, emoji, slash commands. It's a little less polished around the edges, and the app ecosystem is far smaller. But it's fast, and for engineering-heavy teams the workflow fit is excellent.

The Honest Trade-offs

You own the hosting. That means servers, upgrades, backups, scaling, and security patches are your responsibility — or you pay for the Cloud edition. The free self-hosted version lacks SSO, compliance exports, and advanced admin features, which are gated behind paid Enterprise tiers. The integration directory can't compete with Slack's 2,600+ apps. And the UI, while solid, isn't as refined.

Who Should Choose Mattermost

Government agencies, defense contractors, financial firms, healthcare organizations, and any engineering team that needs self-hosted, auditable, fully controlled messaging. If "our chat data cannot live in a third-party cloud" is a hard requirement, Mattermost is the obvious answer.
