Fortinet FortiClient: Best With FortiGate

Fortinet is a networking security company founded in 2000 that dominates the firewall market. FortiClient is their endpoint security agent, and it's designed first and foremost to work with the Fortinet Security Fabric. If you run FortiGate firewalls, FortiClient becomes exponentially more valuable.

Security Fabric Integration

This is where FortiClient shines. The agent reports endpoint compliance status to FortiGate in real time. Non-compliant devices get quarantined at the network level automatically. FortiClient shares threat telemetry with FortiAnalyzer and FortiSIEM. This creates a closed-loop security architecture where your firewall and endpoints work as one system. No other vendor does network-endpoint integration this tightly except Sophos.

What FortiClient Actually Does

The agent bundles VPN (IPSec and SSL), endpoint protection (antivirus and anti-malware), web filtering, vulnerability scanning, and application firewall. The FortiClient EMS (Endpoint Management Server) provides centralized management. FortiEDR (a separate product) adds behavioral detection and response capabilities.

The Free VPN Angle

Here's something competitors don't offer: FortiClient VPN is free. You can download the agent and use it as an IPSec/SSL VPN client connecting to FortiGate appliances at zero cost. Many organizations start with the free VPN and later add the full security suite. It's a smart customer acquisition strategy.

Limitations Without FortiGate

Standalone FortiClient without FortiGate loses most of its advantages. The endpoint protection engine scores around 97-98% in independent tests, trailing CrowdStrike (99.5%), Bitdefender (99.9%), and ESET (99.5%). Without Security Fabric integration, you're paying for a middle-of-the-pack endpoint tool. FortiEDR is a separate purchase with separate pricing, which adds complexity.
